Best Used Hybrids: Ping vs TaylorMade vs Callaway vs Titleist

Which used hybrid to buy, which loft replaces which iron, and real used prices for Ping G-series, TaylorMade Stealth and SIM2, Callaway Big Bertha, Apex and Rogue, and Titleist TS hybrids.

The best used hybrids for most golfers are Ping's G-series (G410, G425, G430), TaylorMade's Stealth and SIM2 Rescue, Callaway's Big Bertha, Rogue and Apex, and Titleist's TS and TSR hybrids. Most sell for $60 to $185 used. The brand matters less than the loft: pick a hybrid that fills the gap above your longest iron you hit well.

Which hybrid replaces which iron?

Go by loft, not the number on the club. MyGolfSpy's general guide:

Your longest iron's loft Hybrid that usually fits
19 to 22 degrees (3 iron to strong 5 iron) 19 degrees (3 hybrid)
22 to 25 degrees (4 iron to strong 6 iron) 22 degrees (4 hybrid)
25 to 28 degrees (5 iron to strong 7 iron) 25 to 26 degrees (5 hybrid)
28 to 31 degrees (6 iron to strong 8 iron) 28 to 30 degrees (6 hybrid)

Iron lofts have gotten stronger over the years, so check your own set's lofts before you choose. Then confirm carry distances on a launch monitor if you can.

Should you carry a hybrid or a fairway wood?

A hybrid is usually better from the rough and uneven lies, with a more iron-like look and a more penetrating flight. A fairway wood, with its bigger head and longer shaft, generally launches higher and lands softer, which helps from the fairway or tee if you struggle to get the ball up. Many golfers carry one of each. For woods, see the best used fairway woods under $150.

Who should carry hybrids?

What to check on a used hybrid

  1. Loft: listed in the title by number (3, 4, 5); the specs show the degrees.
  2. Shaft flex and length: match it to your irons and woods.
  3. Adjustable hosel: many modern hybrids have one; check the setting.
  4. Sole and face condition: hybrids get hit off the turf a lot, so check the photos and condition grade.

Browse all used hybrids, or test a few on the simulator at our Farmers Branch shop, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

FAQ

What hybrid replaces a 4 iron?

Usually a 22 degree (4) hybrid, but check your 4 iron's loft. In newer, stronger-lofted sets, a 19 or 20 degree hybrid may be the right fit.

Are hybrids easier to hit than irons?

For most golfers, yes. Their wider soles and lower, deeper center of gravity help the ball launch and make mishits more playable.

How many hybrids should I carry?

Most golfers carry one or two. Fill the distance gaps between your longest iron and your fairway wood.
