Callaway has used the Epic name more than once, and that can make used listings confusing. The line started in 2017 with a driver built around a structural idea called Jailbreak, then came back in 2019 as Epic Flash and again in 2021 as Epic Speed, Epic Max and Epic Max LS. All of them show up in used inventory, and the differences matter when you are choosing one.

What Changed From Epic to Epic Speed

The original 2017 Epic introduced Jailbreak, two internal bars that connect the crown and sole behind the face so the face can flex more at impact. Epic Flash in 2019 is the one most people point to as a turning point, because its Flash Face was designed with the help of machine learning, which produced a face with an uneven internal thickness pattern. Epic Speed and Epic Max in 2021 kept that approach and added a Jailbreak A.I. Speed Frame, a reworked version of the internal structure. Epic Max is the higher launch, more forgiving head, and Epic Max LS moves the weight to lower spin. Epic Speed sits between them as the standard choice.

Which One Fits Which Player

If you want the most forgiveness, the Max models are the usual place to start. If you already hit the ball high and want less spin, look at the LS or the Sub Zero versions from the Flash generation. Because a used club is one specific loft, shaft and flex, the exact spec on the listing matters as much as the model name. Older Epic Flash heads tend to cost less than the 2021 models, and they are still perfectly playable.
