How to Host a Golf Club Trade-In Event at Your Club

To host a golf club trade-in event at your club, you pick a date, let members know a few weeks ahead, and set up a table where they can bring old clubs to be valued and traded for credit in your golf shop. With GolfRoots, our team handles the valuing, paperwork and payment, so your staff mostly just has to spread the word.

Why do clubs host trade-in events?

Most members have clubs sitting in a garage or locker that they've already replaced. A trade-in event turns those clubs into golf shop credit, which members tend to spend on new equipment, apparel and lessons at the club. It also gives the golf shop a reason to reach out to members that isn't another sale email.

What does a club need to provide?

Very little. For a GolfRoots Trade-In Event, the club provides a 6 or 8 foot table, Wi-Fi and a spot near the golf shop or range where members already pass by. Some clubs use a simulator room or the bag drop. We bring the team and everything else.

How does the event day work?

  1. Before the event: we send marketing materials so the club can promote the date in emails, newsletters and around the shop.
  2. On the day: our trained team runs the event in person for about four hours. Members bring their clubs, we check the model and condition of each one, and give them a value on the spot.
  3. After the event: we send the club a complete member-by-member breakdown and pay by check or credit card. The credit goes to the club's golf shop for members to use.

When is the best time to hold one?

Pick a time when members are already at the club and thinking about equipment: before the start of the season, around a member-guest, ahead of holiday shopping, or when new club releases arrive in the shop. A morning or midday window on a busy weekend day usually works well.

How do you get members to show up?

  • Announce the date three to four weeks out, then remind members the week of and the day before.
  • Put a sign in the golf shop and locker room.
  • Ask the staff to mention it during lessons and fittings.
  • Remind members that putters, wedges and single clubs count, not just full sets.
