Firewheel Golf Park is Garland's municipal golf complex at 600 W. Campbell Road, with 63 holes across three courses: the Old Course, the Lakes Course and the 27-hole Bridges. If you live in northeast Dallas, Richardson, Garland or Rowlett, it is one of the easiest places to find a public tee time with real variety.

How did Firewheel get its name?

In the spring of 1981, Garland city planners walked an overgrown stretch of old farmland in north Garland that was covered in bright pink and yellow wildflowers. Those native flowers are called firewheels, and the name stuck. Firewheel describes the finished complex as the largest group of golf courses in Texas, and it helped pull housing, restaurants and Firewheel Town Center into that part of the city.

What courses are at Firewheel Golf Park?

The Old Course

The original course opened in 1983. It was designed by Dick Phelps and plays as a par 71 of 6,845 yards from the back (Gold) tees, with a course rating of 74.1 and a slope of 135 from those tees. Those numbers make it a serious test from the tips, so most golfers will have more fun moving up a set.

The Lakes Course

The city added the Lakes Course in 1987. It is a full 18-hole regulation course and a good choice if you want a round that feels a little less demanding than the Old.

The Bridges

The Bridges is the newest part of the park, a 27-hole layout with bentgrass greens and a stone clubhouse. Because it has three nines, you can play different 18-hole combinations on different days.

What tournaments has Firewheel hosted?

The Old and Bridges courses have hosted PGA Tour qualifying, a U.S. Open qualifier, a U.S. Amateur qualifier and a Byron Nelson qualifier. Garland's visitor bureau also lists the PGA Texas Women's Open among its events. For what is coming up around the Metroplex, see our DFW golf calendar.

What else is at the park?

  • Food: The Branding Iron Restaurant sits in the Bridges clubhouse, and Grill 64 is the quicker, casual option.
  • Events: The Jerry Andrews Pavilion can host meetings, tournaments and parties for up to 400 guests.
  • Tee times: Book through golffirewheel.com.

Tips for playing Firewheel

  1. Pick the right tees. A 135 slope from the back of the Old Course is no joke. If you are a mid or high handicap, the middle tees will give you more chances at par.
  2. Know which course you booked. With three courses on one property, double check your tee time before you warm up.
  3. Bring a club you trust off the tee. On longer par 4s, a hybrid or fairway wood you hit straight is often worth more than a driver you hit far. Our guide to the best used hybrids can help if your bag has a gap.
  4. Use the spring and fall. North Texas summers are hot. If you play year round, our winter golf in DFW guide covers frost delays and cold weather distance.
